A list of features is not enough to tell whether an expense-tracking app suits you. This seven-day test sets out specific tasks: recording transactions, correcting an error, reviewing a budget and checking access conditions. By the end, you will have information to help you decide whether to keep using it.

Before you start
The example uses fictional amounts in euros. You do not need to move all your data or take out a subscription to get started. This guide is published by Finantzak, so its product examples are not an independent assessment of other applications. To compare general criteria, see our comparison of personal finance apps.
Day 1: define what you need to check
Choose an observable goal: finding your grocery expenses, knowing how much is left in a budget or viewing your records on your phone and computer. Write down what result you would find useful and which features you actually need.
Prepare a small sample of transactions that you can recognise. If you use fictional examples, keep them separate from your real accounts and check how to remove them afterwards. Do not delete your previous records during the test.
Which device will you normally use? Do you want local use, web access or synchronisation? Will you work alone or collaborate with someone else? What information are you willing to store in the application?
Day 2: record transactions and correct an error
Enter, for example, an €18 grocery purchase and a €30 transport pass. Check that they appear in their categories and that you can find them later by date or description. The two expenses total €48.
Change the first amount to €19 and verify that the total becomes €49. The existing transaction should be modified; if two purchases appear, check whether you have created another entry instead of editing it. This simple check helps you assess how clear recording and correcting transactions are.
A transfer between your own accounts should be distinguished from a spending expense. If you are testing Finantzak, recording a transfer does not move money between banks. For more on the method, see the monthly expense tracking guide.
Day 3: check a category-based budget
Create a sample €100 grocery budget for the test period. If you have only recorded the corrected €19 purchase, there should be €81 left in that category. The transport pass should not be deducted from groceries if you categorised it correctly.
Check which period the application uses, which accounts it includes and whether you can locate the transactions behind each total. If the result does not match your calculation, review filters, dates and categories before concluding that there is an error.
Also note an upcoming annual payment and its due date to see whether your planning takes it into account. Dividing an annual amount by twelve can help you plan a monthly reserve, but it does not show how much you have saved or guarantee that you will have enough for a payment due soon. The monthly budget guide explains category-based reviews in more detail.
Day 4: review privacy, data retention and access
Read the privacy policy and terms of use. Distinguish between storing data locally, synchronising it with a server and sending it to an AI assistant. These are different purposes; check the permissions and consents for each.
In Finantzak, free Android use lets you organise accounts, income, expenses, budgets and debts in local personal storage. Web access and personal synchronisation between devices require Premium, with a connection needed for online features. Local use does not mean that Toby works without Internet access.
Before changing phones or applications, check the retention and recovery options available in your version. Do not assume that you can export to any format or automatically import from another app. You can consult the guide to privacy in personal finance apps.
Day 5: advanced features and Toby’s conditions
Toby requires Premium, current consent, a connection and service availability; it is subject to the plan's quotas and limits. Its current conversational financial context is the authorised personal space. Do not assume that it can access all shared spaces or any document.
If you already have access and decide to use it, ask a specific question about your records and cross-check the answer against the source transactions. The assistant can help organise information, but it does not execute bank payments or replace a professional assessment of important financial decisions.
Shared spaces: access and permissions
Creating and administering shared spaces requires Premium. A person without Premium can participate when they meet the conditions of a sponsored space. Review who can view and modify records; not all personal modules are shared.
If two people split €1,000 in rent 50% each, each share is €500. Agree on how to record the initial payment and reimbursements, and check this in the tool. The existence of a shared space does not establish automatic expense splitting or actual money transfers.
Documents and importing
If you need to store supporting documents or import statements, review availability, the plan and supported formats. In Finantzak, files and attachments are subject to Premium access, quotas and permissions. Keeping a receipt is not the same as automatically creating a correct expense. The guide to organising receipts and invoices explains how to avoid counting a purchase twice.
Day 6: follow a normal routine
Use the application when you would actually review your expenses: at the end of the day or during a brief review. Note which steps you find clear, which errors you need to correct and which features you do not use.
An app can offer many tools and still require a routine you do not want to maintain. Assess whether you can record the entire sample and locate a transaction without reconstructing it in another spreadsheet. You do not need to enter additional sensitive information to check navigation.
Day 7: decide with a checklist
Review the week's results using the same criteria for any application. An isolated fault does not prove that the entire tool is unsuitable, but it is worth resolving before relying on it for all your records.
Checks at the end of the week
| Check | Result you can verify |
|---|---|
| Recording and corrections | The two sample expenses total €49, with no duplicates. |
| Budget | Groceries shows €19 spent and €81 available, with the agreed filters. |
| Access | You know what you can use locally and what requires Premium. |
| Privacy | You understand where you store data and which consents are optional. |
| Collaboration | You have checked the space's permissions and conditions, if you need it. |
| Continuity | You have kept your previous records and know what you can recover. |
After reviewing the results
If the main tasks work and the routine feels manageable, expand your use gradually. If a necessary feature is missing, look for an alternative or keep your current method. Finantzak's conditions are described in what Finantzak is and what it offers; check the current plans before subscribing.
Frequently asked questions about testing an expense app: do I need to pay to try Finantzak?
You can start with free local organisation on Android. Web access and personal synchronisation require Premium. Do not subscribe to features you do not need for your test.
Is one week enough to decide?
It helps you check recording, corrections and ease of use. Annual payments, device changes and other less frequent cases require additional checks; seven days do not establish an application's overall reliability.
Do I have to connect my bank?
Finantzak lets you organise records without an automatic bank connection. Recording transactions, debts or transfers does not execute actual operations at the bank.
How do I test shared expenses?
Agree on the split and the data you will record, verify permissions and compare the totals with a simple calculation. In Finantzak, creating and administering the space requires Premium; participation without Premium depends on the sponsored space's conditions.
Can Toby review all my shared spaces?
You should not assume so. Its current conversational financial context is the authorised personal space, subject to Premium, consent, a connection and service limits.
What should I do with my previous data?
Keep access to it while you check the tool. Verify formats and recovery options before migrating; do not delete the source simply because you have completed a brief test.
Decide based on completed tasks
The test should help you answer a specific question: can I record, correct and understand my transactions with a sustainable routine? If the answer is yes and you understand the access and privacy conditions, you will have a more useful basis than a feature list for deciding your next step.
